Assessment Architecture & Core Focus

The CCEA AS Geography examination suite evaluates candidates across three distinct domains: AS 1 (Physical Geography), AS 2 (Human Geography), and AS 3 (Fieldwork Skills and Techniques). The assessment model blends rigorous data handling, diagrammatic annotation, statistical competence, and detailed level-of-response essays.

Where the Marks Are Won and Lost

  • Section A Resource Interpretation: Precise numerical quotation and map/graph extraction are mandatory. In AS 1 and AS 2, extracting quantitative metrics from hydrographs, choropleth maps, and synoptic charts forms the prerequisite for achieving top mark bands.
  • Extended Case Study Application: In Section B essay tasks, examiners look for balanced evaluations that directly integrate place-specific data. Generalised theoretical statements without locational anchoring are capped at Level 2.
  • AS 3 Methodological Rigour: Accurate plotting conventions, precise calculation of statistical steps in Spearman's rank correlation (\(r_s = 1 - \frac{6\sum d^2}{n^3 - n}\)), and critical reflection on primary data sampling techniques are critical discriminators.

Key Examiner Insights & Pitfalls

  • Omitting Diagrammatic Explanations: Questions mandating annotated diagrams (e.g., oxbow lakes, levees, and hurricane structures) cap responses in lower levels if diagrams are absent or lack explanatory annotations.
  • One-Sided Arguments: High-tariff evaluation questions regarding flood zoning or national park designations require both strengths/arguments for and weaknesses/arguments against.
  • Statistical Inaccuracy: In Spearman's rank, common slip-ups include misidentifying degrees of freedom (\(n-2\)) and misreading critical significance thresholds.

Preparation Strategy

Candidates should develop robust case study profiles containing quantitative facts and named locations. Practise drawing well-annotated system diagrams under timed conditions and master standard fieldwork graphical conventions (scaling, metric units, specific titles, and axes labeling).
