- Section B (Core Materials, Processes & Systems): Comprises 50 marks examining fundamental engineering concepts including mechanical advantage (Principle of Moments: \(F_1 \times d_1 = F_2 \times d_2\)), pneumatic circuit components (valves, reservoirs), timber and polymer classifications, quality control gauges, and manufacturing cost breakdown (direct vs indirect overheads).
Examiner Pitfalls & Common Traps
- Vague Material Properties: Candidates frequently lost marks by providing generic non-technical descriptors such as 'cheap', 'strong', or 'non-corrosive' rather than syllabus-specific terminology like high strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistant, or chemical inertness.
- Calculation Assumptions & Unit Conversions: In saw kerf/waste calculations (Q3b) and moments (Q7a), failing to convert units (e.g. converting metres to millimetres or centimetres) led to arithmetic slip-ups. However, the 'own figure rule' (ECF) offered partial recovery.
