Where Marks Were Won and Lost
High-scoring candidates excelled at standard algebraic rearrangements, coordinate geometry fundamentals, and routine cumulative frequency interpretations. However, substantial mark loss was concentrated in:
- Non-Calculator Surd & Trigonometric Geometry: In Paper 23 Question 13, many struggled to find the area of the shaded segment by combining the sector formula with \(\frac{1}{2}ab\sin C\), stumbling on the exact value of \(\sin 30^\circ = 0.5\).
- 3D Frustum Mensuration: Paper 43 Question 6(b) on truncated pyramids posed serious challenges, where few candidates leveraged linear-to-volume scale factor cubing \(\left(\frac{8}{10}\right)^3\) or vertical slant heights for trapezoidal faces.
- Modelling & Communication: Paper 63 saw candidates losing communication marks (\(C\) marks) by omitting explicit substitutions, leaving algebraic steps unwritten, or drawing jagged non-ruled sketches.
Key Examiner Traps & Pitfalls
The Principal Examiner Report highlighted recurring misconceptions:
- Rounding & Premature Approximation: Intermediate rounding in trigonometry and compound growth caused candidates to fall outside acceptable 3 s.f. bounds. In 'Show that' questions, failing to show unrounded intermediate values (e.g., \(67.03^\circ\) before writing \(67.0^\circ\)) led to forfeited marks.
- Modulus Equations: In Paper 43 Question 8(b)(ii), solving \(|2x - 3| = 7\) resulted in candidates obtaining only the positive branch \(x=5\) while neglecting the negative case \(2x - 3 = -7\).
- Conditional Probability Subsets: In Paper 43 Question 9(b)(iii), candidates frequently used the entire cohort of 120 rather than restricting the sample space to the subset of 33 students taking Economics.
Preparation Strategy for Next Series
Ensure fluency with logarithmic transformations (e.g., recognizing \(3 = \log_{10} 1000\)), practice using GDC solve/intersect functions alongside clear mathematical sketches, and write out all mathematical derivations without skipping intermediate operations.
