Introduction to Social Cognition

Welcome! In our previous chapters, we looked at how children develop thinking skills about the physical world (like objects and numbers). Now, we are turning to social cognition. This is essentially the "psychology of people." It is the study of how we come to understand what other people are thinking, feeling, and intending.

Think of social cognition as a social superpower. It allows you to realize that when a friend is quiet, they might be sad rather than just tired. We aren't born with this fully developed; it grows as we get older. We will look at Selman’s levels of perspective-taking, the concept of Theory of Mind, and the biological "engine" behind it all: the mirror neuron system.

1. Selman’s Levels of Perspective-Taking

Robert Selman believed that social development isn't just about behaving better; it’s about a cognitive shift. He focused on perspective-taking: the ability to understand a situation from someone else's point of view.

Selman developed his theory by giving children "social dilemmas." The most famous is the Holly and the Kitten story. In this story, Holly promises her father she won't climb trees, but then finds a kitten stuck in a tree. The child is asked: "How will Holly’s father feel if he finds her in the tree?"

The Five Stages of Development

Level 0: Egocentric (Ages 3–6)
Children cannot distinguish between their own emotions and those of others. They assume that if they are happy Holly saved the kitten, her father will be happy too. They don't realize he might be angry because she broke a promise.

Level 1: Social-Informational (Ages 6–8)
Children now realize that people can have different perspectives. However, they believe this only happens because people have different information. They might say, "The father will be happy because he doesn't know she broke her promise yet."

Level 2: Self-Reflective (Ages 8–10)
Children can now "step into someone else's shoes" and see their own thoughts from another person's perspective. They realize that even if people have the same information, they can still feel differently.

Level 3: Mutual (Ages 10–12)
Children can now look at a situation from a third-party perspective. They can imagine how a neutral bystander would view the interaction between Holly and her father.

Level 4: Social and Conventional System (Ages 12+)
Teens realize that perspective-taking is influenced by larger societal values and cultural norms. They understand that following rules (like keeping promises) is important for keeping society organized, regardless of individual feelings.

2. Theory of Mind (ToM)

Theory of Mind is a specific cognitive ability. It is the understanding that other people have mental states (beliefs, desires, intentions) that are different from our own. It is called a "theory" because we cannot see someone else's mind; we have to "theorize" what they are thinking based on their behavior.

The Sally-Anne Study

To test if children have a Theory of Mind, researchers use False Belief Tasks. The most famous is the Sally-Anne study.

The Procedure:
1. Children are shown two dolls: Sally (who has a basket) and Anne (who has a box).
2. Sally puts a marble in her basket and leaves the room.
3. While Sally is gone, "naughty" Anne moves the marble from the basket to her box.
4. Sally comes back. The child is asked: "Where will Sally look for her marble?"

The Findings:
- Children under 4: Usually fail. They say Sally will look in the box. Because they know the marble is in the box, they assume Sally knows it too.
- Children over 4: Usually pass. They realize Sally has a false belief. She thinks it's in the basket, so she will look there.
- Children with Autism: In the original study, only about \(20\%\) of children with autism passed the test, compared to \(85\%\) of "neurotypical" children. This suggests that a deficit in Theory of Mind might explain some of the social challenges faced by people with autism.

Common Mistake to Avoid: Don't confuse Theory of Mind with empathy. ToM is a cognitive skill (knowing what someone thinks). Empathy is an emotional skill (feeling what someone feels).

3. The Mirror Neuron System

How does the brain actually do "social cognition"? Many psychologists believe the answer lies in mirror neurons.

Mirror neurons are special brain cells that fire both when you perform an action and when you watch someone else perform that same action. It's as if your brain is "mirroring" or "simulating" the other person's behavior.

Discovery and Function

Mirror neurons were discovered by accident in monkeys. Researchers noticed that neurons in the motor cortex fired when a monkey reached for a peanut, but—amazingly—the same neurons fired when the monkey just watched a researcher reach for a peanut.

How this helps social cognition:
1. Intention: By "simulating" someone else's actions in our own brains, we can understand why they are doing something. If you see someone reach for a glass of water, your mirror neurons help you "feel" the intention of thirst.
2. Perspective-taking: Mirror neurons might be the biological basis for Selman’s levels. They allow us to internalize the experiences of others.
3. The "Broken Mirror" Theory: Some researchers suggest that social impairments in autism are caused by a dysfunctional mirror neuron system. If the "mirrors" aren't working, it becomes very hard to intuitively understand the intentions or emotions of others.

Did you know? This is why you might winced when you see someone else stub their toe! Your mirror neurons are firing as if it happened to you.

- AO2 (Application): You might get a scenario where a child struggles to understand a secret. You could apply Theory of Mind here by saying the child hasn't reached the age to understand false beliefs.
- AO3 (Evaluation): Remember that while these theories are great, they are often reductionist. For example, mirror neuron research is often done on animals, and it might be too simple to explain all human social behavior just through brain cells.
